Number 5 is hilarious because I can completely relate. My optician constantly overwhelms my mailbox with horror stories of how not getting eye exams will result in horrendous scenarios to my vision.

Listen, I'm sure the scare tactics work for many people (after all, it IS marketing) but for someone like me who has anxiety, it's just irritating and makes me harbor negative feelings about the sender.

Nice post and yes - it's all very true by example.

Social anxiety disorder greatly reduces the quality of a person’s life. People who suffer from social anxiety miss out on so much that life has to offer. Opportunities are greatly limited, because the person who suffers from social anxiety cannot take advantage of any opportunity that might require social interaction – and most opportunities in life do require some sort of social interaction.'

Hi - thanks for your comments - the best way to find our what works is to experiment! It obviously depends what kind of business/product you are seeking to build a community around. I recently advised someone to talk to their clients, even put out a survey about which social media they use and then get started with those. If you want to talk to people and communicate, there is no point doing it in places where they are not.

Hi, I've been a bit of a grumpy old woman when it comes to social media - especially Twitter. My mission at the moment is to find out what is working and what isn't. As a marketer, I can't afford to ignore this new media any more. But have to admit - it's a bit like trying to get a toddler to eat their greens at the moment.

So I'd be interested if any other readers have thoughts about what is working and what isn't - and how to cut through all the time wasting rubbish. Everyone says they don't have enough time for family, friends, exercising etc - but some are certainly wasting bucket loads with the rubbish which is out there.

Hi Jacinta.
There is a lot of trash out there but like any networking you have to look around to find the right groups and keep at it to get anything back. It might be likened to finding the right book group - if they are reading 50 Shades of Grey then perhaps you had better run for the hills! It could be worth getting recommendations from people in your field as I am sure somewhere out there there are a whole host of freelance market research consultants having vibrant discussions! (or not)

I am new to LinkedIn having only joined in last few months. I joined a few groups related to my professional - market researchers - and am disappointed with the content: a lot of spam and not much worth learning about. A friend of mine said he is only on LinkedIn for the purposes of 'buzz word bingo' - hoping his CV gets spotted in the cloud by putting in all the right buzz words. A cyncial perspective but I can't help thinking he has a point.

Hi Dan, I think it is perfectly fine to decline someone and that option should appear if you visit your profile and look at the matters pending. If you can't see it straight away then just leave them until you can (this has happened to me! Why can you see some options one day and not another?) If you click - I don't know them - you risk sending them into spam limbo which is unfair unless they have been pestering. However, a blogger pointed out that if the person wanting to connect with you sends you a thoughtful request, written in their own words, that says exactly why they want to add you to their network, then they probably deserve a hearing.

I have built up a small active group with the right content in one of my groups but in another there is nothing but silence! I think there may well be lurkers there but it is my job to tweak the name and the content until a few of them can't resist joining in! I love the challenge! It is like finding the right stories for your newspaper or getting more opens on your newsletter using headlines, content etc A great job for an ex journalist like me.
